One enterprise learning platform for all
Discover how STIHL consolidated six different learning systems into a single and standardised form within one LMS.
Enterprise learning data for long-term growth and better forecasting
Quality “made by STIHL” is a core brand promise that dates all the way back to 1926. Since then, the one-man operation founded by Andreas Stihl in southern Germany has blossomed into an international mechatronics company. Today, STIHL is the world’s top-selling chainsaw brand. The company employs over 20,000 people and has a presence in 160 countries across five continents.

How to share decades of knowledge
STIHL builds all its tools— whether chainsaws, lawnmowers, or hedge clippers— to be high-quality, safe, easy to use, and long-lasting. To ensure this, employees at the 50,000 dealerships worldwide repair any older model at any time. STIHL equips its employees and sales partners with enterprise learning solutions, providing detailed, digital product information that is quick to access and globally available.
This enterprise learning approach ensures that every dealership can maintain and service STIHL tools efficiently, regardless of their age or model.
One learning platform for all
STIHL ensured its staff could access product and service training courses anytime, from anywhere in the world. In 2020, the company implemented the learning management system (LMS) developed by imc AG.
imc business consultant David Jost advised STIHL during the implementation of the imc Learning Suite. “STIHL’s structure, with several national operating companies, presented a unique challenge,” he explains. “They were using six different learning systems, which we had to migrate in a standardised form to our LMS. This required in-depth discussions about the requirements and running through a variety of scenarios.”
Enterprise learning analytics for better forecasting
After rolling out the system globally and retiring the legacy systems, STIHL plans to take the next step by leveraging its data. The company aims to use the imc Learning Platform’s learning analytics dashboard to visualise learning success.
David Jost explains that this goes beyond simply counting the number of elearning courses completed or calculating average training hours. It focuses on answering key questions, such as:
- How can course managers make informed decisions using solid data?
- How can learners achieve optimal learning outcomes?
- How do professional development courses contribute to corporate objectives?
By addressing these questions, STIHL can align its learning programmes with its long-term corporate strategy. The company can then use learning data to visualise how enterprise learning contributes to achieving strategic goals.
