Digital learning in 170 healthcare clinics
Fast and efficient learning with a modern enterprise platform
Asklepios Kliniken GmbH & Co. KGaA, with around 170 locations in 14 federal states, is one of the largest clinic operators in Germany. Founded in 1985, the healthcare group is headquartered in Hamburg, employs around 68,000 people from over 140 countries, and cares for approximately 3.4 million patients per year.
Digitalisation and modern technologies play a key role in ensuring optimal healthcare. The group aims to be carbon neutral by 2040.
Efficient learning management in healthcare
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic presented a significant challenge for Asklepios, as the previous approach to further training and education suddenly no longer worked. This was particularly evident at the Medical School, where digital teaching became necessary for students. The group took this as an opportunity to seek a digital solution for its various clinics, medical care centres, and educational centres.
There was no digital learning platform at the time, just a collaboration with Thieme Verlag and its CNE offering, through which Asklepios obtained learning content for various mandatory training sessions.
Training events often took up a whole working day for employees as they were conducted in person. This meant staff were unavailable for shifts, posing a challenge for workforce planning.
Additionally, the obligation to provide proof of training required by the Medical Service (for mandatory training and equipment inductions) was cumbersome: signed certificates had to be scanned and sent in large quantities, leading to significant administrative effort.
A robust digital learning platform for the entire group
Asklepios knew they needed digital solution. Dr. Christoph Jermann, the then managing director of the Medical School, assembled a project team comprising internal IT experts and volunteers from various clinics to find the right provider. The workers' council also got involved.
Asklepios made the decision within six months – a quick process for a company of this size. Asklepios chose the imc Learning Suite as a comprehensive learning platform.
“What convinced us about imc was that we could integrate the entire group,” explains Anka Weder, project manager of the ASKnow learning platform at Asklepios. “With two divisions and various subsidiaries, this was particularly important to us. It would have been more complicated with the other provider.”
imc implemented the system swiftly too: after two initial training sessions, Asklepios launched straight away with a compliance course. The large number of employees did present some challenges during the process, but these were successfully managed through close cooperation between Asklepios and imc.
Efficiency and flexibility through digital learning
Asklepios now has 48,000 users on the platform, with 450 in-house training courses available. Since its introduction, the number of users per month has increased by 300 percent. The company now offers centralised training on topics like data protection for all clinics, eliminating the need to organise them individually.
Anka Weder reports: “Our goal is that no more in-person events take place at our facilities if they only cover theoretical content. Of course, some training still requires a physical presence, but the number of such sessions has significantly reduced.”
Digital learning has made daily work much more flexible for staff: they can complete training on-demand at times that suit them best. For instance, training sessions often take place during the quieter summer months in the clinics.
Anka Weder sees another significant advantage of digital learning: “Our staff, who usually work on-site with patients, can access learning content from anywhere. Mobile and flexible working in this industry naturally strengthens the employer’s position. We’ve embraced this and are doing everything we can to continuously expand the offering and provide individual support to colleagues.”
The Learning Suite also makes it much easier to provide proof of mandatory training. What used to take five working days and involved scanning large numbers of certificates, the team can now complete in minutes: they simply export the required data from the system.
Anka Weder particularly appreciates the solution-oriented approach and quick response times in the partnership with imc. Additionally, her contacts at imc understand the structure of a hospital and can specifically address its unique requirements.
“I would definitely recommend the Learning Suite to other clinics because it addresses the challenges that hospitals face. There’s no better way to meet their needs,” summarises Anka Weder.
